〈보수주의자의 신조〉
마이클 하워드 영국 보수당 대표(2004.01.02.)가 주장했다.

   1. 자신은 물론 가족의 건강과 부, 행복을 추구하는 것은 자연스러운 것이라고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe it is natural for men and women to want health, wealth and happiness for their families and themselves.

   2. 인간의 본성을 추구하지 못하도록 막는 장애를 제거하기 위해 헌신하는 것이 정치인의 의무라고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe it is the duty of every politician to serve the people by removing the obstacles in the way of these 

ambitions.

   3. 국민은 스스로 삶의 주인으로서 간섭과 통제를 받지 않을 때 행복하다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe people are most likely to be happy when they are masters of their own lives, when they are not nannied or over-governed.

   4. 국민은 커야 하며 정부는 작아야 한다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe that the people should be big. That the state should be small.

   5. 형식주의, 관료주의, 규정과 조사, 각종 위원회와 정부기관이 국민을 보호하기 위해 만들어졌지고 하지만, 

      이런 것들이 오히려 우리를 억압하고 있다고 나는 믿는다. 외부간섭은 행복에 도움이 되지 않는다.
   I believe red tape, bureaucracy, regulations, inspectorates, commissions, quangos, ‘czars’, ‘units’ and ‘targets’ came to help and protect us, but now we need protection from them. Armies of interferers don‘t contribute to human 

happiness.

   6. 모든 국민은 잠재 능력을 최대한 발휘할 수 있는 기회를 가져야 한다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe that people must have every opportunity to fulfil their potential.

   7. 책임 없는 자유는 없다고 나는 믿는다. 스스로 돌보지 못하는 사람들을 돌보는 것은 우리의 의무다.  

 I believe there is no freedom without responsibility. It is our duty to look after those who cannot help themselves.

   8. 기회 균등의 중요성을 나는 믿는다. 불공정은 우리를 화나게 만든다.
   I believe in equality of opportunity. Injustice makes us angry.

   9. 부모는 자녀들이 자신보다 더 나은 교육을 받기를 원한다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe every parent wants their child to have a better education than they had.

   10. 모든 자녀들은 부모가 노년에 평안하기를 바란다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe every child wants security for their parents in their old age.

   11. 누군가의 가난이 다른 사람의 부 때문이라고 나는 믿지 않는다.
   I do not believe that one person’s poverty is caused by another’s wealth.

   12. 누군가의 무지가 다른 사람의 지식이나 고학력 때문이라고 나는 믿지 않는다.
   I do not believe that one person’s ignorance is caused by another’s knowledge and education.

   13. 누군가의 질환이 다른 사람의 건강 때문에 나빠졌다고 나는 믿지 않는다.
   I do not believe that one person’s sickness is made worse by another’s health.

   14. 영국인들은 자유로울 때만 행복할 수 있다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe the British people are only happy when they are free.

   15. 영국(국가)은 아무리 강한 적이 침범하더라도 자유를 지켜야 한다고 나는 믿는다.
   I believe that Britain should defend her freedom at any time, against all comers, however mighty.

   16. 행운, 노력, 재능, 다양성을 통해 영국이 고귀한 과거와 약동하는 미래를 가진 위대한 사람들의 

       고향이 될 수 있다고 나는 믿는다. 나는 이들을 위해 봉사하게돼 행복하다.
   I believe that by good fortune, hard work, natural talent and rich diversity, these islands are home to a great 

people with a noble past and exciting future. I am happy to be their servant.
