롱펠로우's 인생찬가

WHAT THE HEART OF THE YOUNG MAN SAID TO THE PSALMIST.

Tell me not, in mournful numbers,           슬픈 목소리로 내게 말하지 마라.

Life is but an empty dream!                 인생은 다만 헛된 꿈에 지나지 않는다고!

For the soul is dead that slumbers,         잠든 영혼은 죽은 것이니

And things are not what they seem.          만물은 겉 모양 그대로는 아니다. 

Life is real!  Life is earnest!             인생은 진실이다,인생은 진지하다!

And the grave is not its goal;              무덤이 인생의 종말이 될 수는 없다.

Dust thou art, to dust returnest,           '너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가라'는 말은

Was not spoken of the soul.                 영혼을 두고 한 말이 아니다. 

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow,              인생이 가야 할 곳, 또한 가는 길은

Is our destined end or way;                 향락도 비통도 아니다.

But to act, that each to-morrow             내일이 오늘보다 낫도록

Find us farther than to-day.                저마다 행하는 그것이 목적이며 길이다. 

Art is long, and Time is fleeting,          예술은 길고 세월은 빨리 간다.

And our hearts, though stout and brave,     우리의 심장은 튼튼하고 용감하지만

Still, like muffled drums, are beating      지금 이 순간에도 낮은 북 소리처럼

Funeral marches to the grave.               무덤으로 가는 장송곡을 울리고 있구나.

In the world's broad field of battle,       인생이란 드넓은 싸움터에서

In the bivouac of Life,                     노상에서 잠을 잔다 하더라도

Be not like dumb, driven cattle!            발 잃고 쫓기는 짐승같이 되지 말고

Be a hero in the strife!                    싸움에 뛰어드는 영웅이 되라. 

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant!          아무리 즐거워도 미래를 믿지 마라.

Let the dead Past bury its dead!            죽은 과거는 그대로 묻어 버려라.

Act,--act in the living Present!            행동하라 살아 있는 현재에 행동하라.

Heart within, and God o'erhead!             안에는 마음이,머리 위에는 신이 있다.

Lives of great men all remind us            위인들의 생애는 우리를 깨우친다.

We can make our lives sublime,              우리도 장엄한 인생을 이룰 수 있으니

And, departing, leave behind us             우리가 지나간 시간의 모래 위에

Footprints on the sands of time;--          발자국은 남길 수 있다.

Footprints, that perhaps another,           그 발자국은 훗날 다른 이가

Sailing o'er life's solemn main,            인생의 장엄한 바다를 건너다가

A forlorn and shipwrecked brother,          조난 당해 버려진 형제의 눈에 띄어

Seeing, shall take heart again.             새로운 용기를 얻게 될 것이다.

Let us, then, be up and doing,              자,우리 모두 일어나 일하자.

With a heart for any fate;                  어떤 운명에도 굴하지 않을 용기를 가지고

Still achieving, still pursuing,            끊임없이 이루고 도전하면서

Learn to labor and to wait.                 일하며 기다림을 배우자.
